the Petersburg school of Russian classical ballet, began his career as
soloist at the Maryinsky Theatre where he was later to mount his first
important choreo-graphic works "Stone Flower" by S.Prokofiev and "Legend
of Love" by A.Melikov. These productions made Grigorovich's name as a choreographer
and pointed the way to new trends that, for many years, determined the
devel-opment of the Russian ballet.
For over 30 years (1964-1995), Yuri Grigorovich was chief choreogra-pher
of the Bolshoi Theatre. These were the years of the company's greatest
ar-tistic achievements when it won for itself a world-wide reputation.
Under Grig-orovich the Bolshoi Ballet Company went on over 90 foreign tours,
thus estab-lishing the leadership of the Russian classical school of ballet
all over the world and bringing world fame to the company's brilliant galaxy
of soloists.
The ballets Grigorovich created at the Bolshoi made him famous. They
include: Thaikovsky's "Natcracker" (1966), "Spartacus" by A.Khachaturyan
(1968), "Ivan The Terrible" S.Prokofiev (1975), "Angara" A.Eshpai (1976),
"Romeo and Juliet" S.Prokofiev (1979). And "The Golden Age" D.Shostakovich
(1982).

MARINA SEMENOVA
Marina Semenova — a legend of the Russian ballet, an outstanding dancer
and a great pedagogue, a person of the century in the sphere of choreography,
whose talent is beyond any times and epochs.
The famous ballets of the Impetrator's were still performed when Semenova
started her career. She could learn and absorb traditions of the great
Russian classical ballet school and teach them later to her students -
ballet stars of nowadays.
It was Marina Semenova who was the first and the most favourite student
of Agripina Vaganova, the founder of modern classical ballet methodic.
From her honoured teacher Semenova gained brilliant education and because
of that she became a symbol of a new epoch in dancing art. She proved the
right of classical ballet to exist despite all difficulties our country
was going through. To the bright virtuousness and exactitude of Russian
classical ballet she brought a new natural manner of dancing.
Public always admired Semenova's flawless technique, queenly statue
and great ballerina's aplomb.
She managed to unite Saint-Petersburg ballet academic tradition, Moscow
bright emotionality and the power of own actor's talent to hypnotize the
public.
For nearly half a century Semenova has been growing up new masters
of ballet - in The Bolshoi, in G1TIS, in Choreography College. Like no
other, she could see and open the inner world of a future ballet star and
reveal the individuality. Her classes taught strength, formed clean and
flawless lines and poses, prepared for performances. Such great ballet
stars as M.Plisetskaya, N.Bessmernova, N.Sorokina, M.Kondratyeva, N.Timofeeva,
G. Stepanenko are among her students.
She has celebrated her a hundred anniversary recently.
