XI International Ballet Competition and Contest of Choreographers 
Dedicated to the great Russian ballet star Marina Semenova 

The Competition will be held in Moscow at the Bolshoi Theatre from June 10 till June 20, 2009. 


RULES OF THE BALLET COMPETITION

1.APPLICATION ORDER
1.1. The Competition will be held in two age divisions: Junior Division (boys and girls) and Senior Division (male and female). The Competition in each division will be held in two categories: solo and duo.
Junior Division: young dancers, younger 18 years of age at the moment of the Competition, will have the right to join Junior Division of the Competition.
Senior Division: Male and female dancers, who are younger than 26 and elder than 18 years old at the moment of the Competition, will have the right to join the Senior Division of the Competition.
1.2. The Competition will be held in Moscow at the Bolshoi Theatre from June 10 till June 20, 2009. 
1.3. Applicants wishing to participate in the Competition are requested to send the following documents to the Competition Board by registered mail, express mail or e-mail:
a) application form (please sample attached);
b) X- copy of passport;
c) X- copy of the dance education certificate;
d) brief curriculum vitae;
e) proposed program for each of the Competition three rounds, with the title of each work, name of the composer and the choreographer (please see form in attachment);
f) the following photographs of the applicant: one 4x6 cm photograph, two 10x15 cm photographs, one of which must be in a stage costume;
g) Video-tape of high quality (DVD) with applicant’s/ applicants’ performance of one variation or duet. The video-recording should be duly signed: name and surname of applicant, title of performed item and date of recording.
Note: Laureates of International Ballet Competitions – members of International Federation of Ballet Competitions- will be admitted to the Competition without preliminary selections. In this case they must submit X-copy of the Diploma of Laureate instead of video-recording.
1.4. The participation fee shall be paid in cash during the registration procedure at the Competition and payment will be effected in rubles: for participants of the Junior Division – 2500 RBL; for participants of the Senior Division – 3600 RBL.

1.6. The Organizing Committee shall admit not more than 150 contestants, chosen on the basis of their applications and video-recordings by the Selection Committee.
1.7. If a contestant declines to take part in the Competition, all documents, video-recordings submitted and relating to the participant shall not be returned. The participation fee is non-refundable.
1.8. Applicants admitted to the Competition will be notified by the Competition Board not later than April 20, 2009.
1.9. Upon receiving notification foreign contestants shall apply for their visas and submit a formal invitation letter to the Russian Consulate.

2. PROCEDURE
2.1.  The Competition will be held in three rounds. Performance in the Final ( Third ) Round will be with orchestral accompaniment.
2.2.  Performing order will be determined by ballot and will be preserved till the end of the Competition. Performing order for duets is determined by the order number of the female competitor.
2.3. After registration and drawing lot procedure, changes in the Contestant’s program can be made only in exceptional cases and only with the permission of the Jury.
2.4. Performance of each Contestant will be estimated individually whether he/she appears in solo or in duet category. Contestants performing in duets will have the right to perform with non-competing partners.
2.5. In the event that a Contestant performing in Duet category is not admitted to the Second or the Third rounds, he or she must stay until the end of the Competition (at the expense of the Competition Board) and continue to appear with his/her partner who is continuing to compete in subsequent rounds, the Closing Ceremony and two Gala Performances of Laureates.
2.6. In the event that Contestants perform a contemporary piece staged by choreographer who becomes a laureate or diploma-holder of the Contest of Choreographers, but will not be admitted to the Second or the Third rounds, they, their partners and pianists shall stay till the end of the Competition (at the expense of the Competition Board) and will participate in the Closing Ceremony and two Gala Performances of Laureates.
2.7. Contestants shall have the right to use audio-recordings for their performance or perform with pianist. In the event needed, Competition Board will provide pianist free of charge.
2.8. Contestants who are to perform with pianists, must bring their own piano scores with them.
2.9. Contestants who use audio-recordings on CD or mini-CD as accompaniment, shall submit them to the Competition Board upon arrival at the Competition. 
The name of competitor, item's title and Round number should be clearly and duly stated. Participants must submit recordings for each piece separately.
2.10. The Jury reserves the right: 
- not to award all prizes; 
- to divide prize between contestants (except for the Grand Prix);
-to award titles of Diploma-holders to participants of the Final Round who were not awarded the title of Laureate;
- to award special prizes. 
Decisions of the Jury shall be final and will not be subjected to review.
2.11. All Laureates and Diploma Holders, their partners and pianists must perform free of charge at the Closing Ceremony and at two Gala Performances (if announced) with the program agreed by the Jury and Competition Board.
2.12. The Competition Board reserves all rights for TV broadcasting, video recording and filming of all three Rounds, Closing Ceremony and two Gala-concerts of laureates and Diploma Holders of the Competition, as well as for their further distribution (on commercial basis including) without additional fee payable to the contestants, their partners or pianists.
The Competition Board reserves the exclusive right to sign contracts with third parties for merchandising of the above-mentioned material.
Video recording and filming shall be possible only upon receipt of special permission from the Competition Board.

3. FINANCIAL CONDITIONS
3.1. Contestants, their partners and pianists will arrive at the Competition on the dates set forth by the Competition Board in the Letter of Invitation.
At the desire contestants can arrive before the specified dates to prepare for the Competition. In this case, they will be considered responsible to pay for their staying themselves up to the specified date of arrival set by the Competition Board.
3.2. The Competition Board shall pay for staying (hotel accommodation and meals) of the contestants, their partners and pianists  only for the period of their official participation in the Competition: from the date of their arrival in Moscow but not earlier than specified date, and for not more than two days after the end of the Round in which the contestant took part.
3.3. Contestants who arrived at the Competition and refused to perform, and also Contestants who are not admitted to the Second and Third Rounds, and their partners may stay up to the end of Competition at their own expense.
3.4. In the event of preliminary request Competition Board will assist persons accompanying the contestant (teachers, relatives) in visa arrangement, hotel reservation and booking tickets for Competition Rounds.
3.5. Competition Board will not provide Contestants and their partners, also their accompanying persons, with insurance.
3.6. The Competition Board will not provide contestants with  music, scenic suits, make-up and ballet footwear.
3.7. The Competition Board will provide contestants with classes to rehearse and one stage rehearsal before each Round at the place where the Competition will be held.
3.8. By signing the Application Form, applicants will be deemed to declare that they fully accept the Rules of the Competition, without reservation.
 

RULES OF THE CONTEST OF CHOREOGRAPHERS

4. APPLICATION AND PROCEDURE
4.1. Contest of Choreographers is arranged basing on contemporary dance works specially choreographed for the Competition. There are no age restrictions.
4.2. Choreographers wishing to participate in the Contest of Choreographers should send the following documents by registered mail, express mail or by e-mail to the address of the Competition Board: 
a) application form (please see attachment);
b) brief curriculum vitae;
c) following photographs: one 4x6 cm photograph, along with two 10x15 cm black and white photographs;
d) X-copy of passport;
e) X-copy of education certificate.
Application fee in the amount of RBL3600 shall be paid by contestants upon their arrival at the Competition during Registration procedure and payment will be effected in rubles.
4.3. To participate in the Competition choreographer will present two pieces: one- solo, the other – for ensemble (up to three dancers). One of the two pieces should be choreographed for the contestant or contestants of the present Ballet Competition; either contestants or specially invited dancers (without age restrictions) might be involved by choreographer in the performance of the second piece.
4.4. A solo work to be performed in the Junior division should not exceed 4 minutes, and for ensemble performance – 5 minutes. 
A solo piece to be performed in the Senior division should not exceed 5 minutes, and for ensemble performance - should not exceed 7 minutes.
4.5. There are no restrictions on the choice of music.
4.6. There are no restrictions on the choice of contemporary dance style.
4.7. The final results of the Contest shall be announced after the second pieces of the Contest have been viewed.
4.8. The Jury has the right: 
- not to award all of the available prizes; 
- to divide any prize between contestants;
- to award titles of Diploma holders and special prizes to contestants who were not awarded title of laureate. 
Decisions of the Jury are final and shall not be subjected to review.
4.9. Choreographers admitted to the Contest will be notified by the Organizing Committee not later than April 20, 2009.
4.10. The presence of choreographers admitted to the Contest is most welcome but not obligatory.

5. FINANCIAL CONDITIONS
5.1. Choreographers and dancers who perform their pieces must arrive at the Competition on the dates set forth by the Organizing Committee in the formal Letter of Invitation.
5.2. Foreign contestants shall apply for their Russian entry visas at a Russian Consulate after receiving formal Letter of Invitation and confirmation of participation.
5.3. The Competition Board shall pay for hotel accommodation and meals for the choreographers, their dancers and pianists for the period of their official participation in the Contest: from the day of their arrival (but not earlier than the date specified in the invitation) and for not more than two days after the announcement of the results of the Contest.
5.4. Choreographers, who became Laureates and Diploma Holders of the Contest, as well as for their dancers and pianists, must stay for the entire period of the Contest at the expense of the Competition Board (hotel and meals) and shall perform free of charge in the Closing Ceremony (concert) and in two Gala-Concerts of Laureates and Diploma-Holders.
5.5. Choreographers who arrive at the Competition and receive no awards or diplomas, as well as their dancers and pianists, may stay till the end of the Contest at their own expense.
5.6. The Competition Board can assist persons accompanying contestants with visa arrangement, hotel reservation and tickets to the Competition, if requested to do so sufficiently in advance of the dates required.
5.7. The Competition Board shall not provide choreographers, their dancers, pianists as well as persons accompanying them, with any insurance.
5.8. The Competition Board reserves all rights for TV broadcasting, videotaping and filming of the contemporary works choreographed for the present Competition during all Competition Rounds, the Closing Ceremony and two Gala Performances, as well as for their further distribution without fee payable to contestants. The Competition Board reserves the exclusive right to sign contracts with third parties for merchandising of the above-mentioned material.
Videotaping and filming at the Competition will be possible only upon receipt of special permission from the Competition Board.
5.9. By signing the Application Form, choreographers will be deemed to declare that they fully accept the Rules of the Competition and of the Contest, without reservation.
